CAPITAL investment projects worth more than £85 billion will be discussed over the next two days at a conference run in partnership with SSE Energy Solutions.
The “Tomorrow’s Net Zero” conference, organised by Built Environment Networking, will bring together delegates from the commercial, industrial, and residential sectors to discuss how the property industry can tackle the climate emergency.
The event, held at Kensington Town Hall in London, will consider how the public and private sectors will decarbonise their infrastructure to meet the UK and Ireland’s 2050 net zero targets.
SSE will share details of its own ambitious net-zero acceleration plan, under which it is increasing its clean energy investments by 65% to £12.5 billion by 2026.
The FTSE 100 group is investing the equivalent of £7 million each day to unleash the low-carbon infrastructure that the UK and Ireland need to complete their net-zero transition.
Noel Powell, head of regeneration and development at SSE Energy Solutions, said: “The net-zero transition provides a once-in-a-century opportunity for regeneration and development projects throughout the UK and Ireland.
“By investing in low-carbon infrastructure and power sources, the British and Irish property industries can help to tackle the climate emergency and also kick-start economic prosperity in communities throughout these islands.
“SSE Energy Solutions’ regeneration and development team works day-in, day-out to support developers, investors, and consultants with their projects, and we’ll be looking for opportunities to help new and existing customers over the next two days at the conference.
“As well as discussing the infrastructure that we provide for power networks, we’ll also be having conversations about how we can develop and support recharging points for electric vehicles (EVs), on-site solar and battery energy storage equipment, and building energy management systems.”
Mr Powell added: “Having begun my career as an apprentice electrical engineer, I have first-hand experience of the opportunities and benefits offered through training in the low-carbon industries.
“SSE is committed to creating 1,000 jobs each year between now and 2025, powering the workforce that will be needed for the UK and Ireland to hit their ambitious 2050 net-zero targets.
“They’ll be joining our workforce of more than 10,000 colleagues across Britain and Ireland, who are laying the foundations for helping to achieve our countries’ economic ambitions and climate goals.
“We’re training the next generation of apprentices and other staff who will help our countries to tackle the climate emergency.”
Tomorrow’s Net Zero conference marks SSE’s first partnership with Built Environment Networking.
The group is already planning to attend the UK’s Real Estate Investment & Infrastructure Forum at the Royal Armouries in Leeds next May, along with regional events in Manchester and the Midlands.
Keith Griffiths, chief executive at Built Environment Networking, said: “We are thrilled to have SSE on board with our Tomorrow’s Net Zero event.
“SSE is committed to becoming a fully operational net-zero business by 2050.
“These types of commitments can be showcased at the event to developers, investors, and local authorities to help SSE grow its already substantial partner list, while also having the chance to spark conversations with industry leaders about what needs to change within their sector to create Tomorrow’s Net Zero Britain.”
