We’ve all heard a lot about how 5G is transforming the tech world – but 5G also presents a major opportunity for the construction and property industry.
In 2019 the first 5G networks went live in the UK, and the network has been expanding ever since then at pace. 5G – meaning the fifth generation of broadband mobile network.
Ultra low latency, an ability to connect to significantly more devices than ever before and superfast download speeds in the Gbits per second are some of the key improvements coming in this generation.
Whilst the exact costs of rolling out 5G are not known, it has been estimated that the UK could have invested around £9.5bn in infrastructure for the new technology by 2025.
This means that there are major opportunities for firms across the supply chain and broader built environment industry to win work and to benefit from this historic telecoms investment.
Widespread rollout of 5G was mooted for 2025, but this has been delayed by possibly up to two years – enabling a longer opportunity window for the industry. There will also still be many more peripheral areas that will the technology can will continue to be expanded to in the future.
Although 5G is using a reasonable amount of existing infrastructure the sites will provide further maintenance opportunities. This will provide additional benefits to those working within the built environment.
5G will also help to deliver the upcoming technological revolution within the construction industry. From the use of augmented reality, drones, autonomous construction equipment and vehicles and 3D printing, all will benefit from the introduction of 5G.
This is enabled through the Internet of Things (IOT) which enables a lot of contemporary technology to work. With 5G at its maximum, the amount of data that can be processed is a massive 100 times beyond what can be achieved with 4G!
The technology is also expected to add more than £43bn to the UK economy by 2030! This will help to spur on more growth and development and enable further opportunities for the UK’s built environment.
